J. Michael Barrett
Mike is a national security expert with an extensive background in defense policy, military intelligence, and support to US counter-terrorism operations.
In addition to creating Diligent Innovations, his broad national security credentials include serving as the Director of Strategy for the White House Homeland Security Council, an Intelligence Officer for the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and Senior Analyst for the War on Terrorism Branch of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, where he helped develop the 2007 National Strategy for Homeland Security, the National Military Strategic Plan for the War on Terrorism, and the National Strategy for Global Supply Chain Security.
Mike is also a frequent TV commentator and news analyst, having appeared more than 50 times on ABC Nightline, Bloomberg, CNBC, CNN, Fox News, FRONTLINE, MSNBC, NBC, and NPR discussing foreign policy, counter-terrorism, and military strategy.
He has authored dozens of articles in Defense News, Foreign Policy, Naval Institute’s Proceedings, The Wall Street Journal, The Washington Post, and The Washington Times, and is the co-author of two books on security and counter-terrorism (including a New York Times Best Seller).
A former Fulbright Scholar, Mike received an M.A. in Strategic Studies and International Economics from the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies (SAIS) in Washington, D.C., and an M.B.A. from the Australian School of Business in Sydney, Australia. He also graduated cum laude with a B.A. in International Relations from The University of Pennsylvania. He has given lectures at National Defense University, Georgetown University, and Joint Special Operations University.
